As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
